Yahoo Media Group and The Nonfiction Hotlist Partner to Expand Reach and Recognition for Documentary Short Films

Yahoo to promote and distribute 20 short films curated by The Nonfiction Hotlist from an open call to filmmakers.

Note: Verizon Media is now known as Yahoo.

Yahoo Media Group and The Nonfiction Hotlist are teaming up to create a new pathway for nonfiction filmmakers to showcase their work to a global audience. Through the partnership, Yahoo will continue to grow its video offering by promoting and distributing 20 short documentary films curated from open call submissions. The Nonfiction Hotlist, a leading documentary content curation and distribution platform known for identifying exceptional stories and connecting filmmakers with major distribution opportunities, will oversee the entire curatorial process.

By combining the distribution of Yahoo with the deep industry expertise and curatorial rigor of The Nonfiction Hotlist, the partnership aims to bring meaningful visibility, awareness, and monetization to great filmmakers and their films.

  • Yahoo will distribute the selected films across its properties, including yahoosports.tv and its Yahoo Sports Network and Yahoo Finance FAST channels.
  • Yahoo will further amplify the films with additional content such as filmmaker interviews, behind-the-scenes features, and in-depth companion articles.
  • Selected filmmakers will also be paid for their work, ensuring fair compensation for creators.

Beginning today, filmmakers can submit their projects for consideration in the following six categories: 1) Sports and Athleticism; 2) Business and Economics; 3) Science, Innovation and Technology; 4) Nature and Environment; 5) Arts and Culture; 6) Biography and Lifestyle. Films will be selected based on artistic merit, powerful storytelling, and cultural relevance.

“The nonfiction community needs partners who understand that great storytelling deserves both reach and respect,” said Adam Neuhaus, CEO and co-founder of The Nonfiction Hotlist. “The Nonfiction Hotlist has built the relationships, curatorial expertise, and industry trust to ensure this partnership delivers real value to filmmakers – not just exposure, but meaningful compensation and professional opportunities. Together with Yahoo, we can give these films meaningful global exposure and create the exact kind of pathway the industry needs right now. This is about building sustainable models where exceptional nonfiction finds its audience.”

“We’re thrilled to team up with The Nonfiction Hotlist to champion a new wave of documentary filmmakers and expand our video offering with a great, unique collection of films,” said Ryan Spoon, President of Yahoo Media Group. “We’re proud to help create new lanes for support, recognition, and discovery by introducing these standout filmmakers and projects to our Yahoo audience and properties.”

  • Completion Date: Films must have been finished between January 2023 and March 2026.
